Stories of Student Success: Shanelle

Each student has a unique story, and every student’s story inspires our work and drives us to continue in our mission to unlock potential. Below is one such story:

Name: Shanelle
Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana
Why Shanelle is Pursuing Higher Education:

Going to college has always been my dream. I am a first-generation college student and take so much pride in that. Getting a college degree to me is like receiving a trophy. It resembles so much hard work, dedication, strength and devotion. It resembles an intellectual person ready to take on the journey of life. I have always aimed for the trophy. I’ve never wanted anything more in my life than success. I feel by obtaining a college degree it gives me all the prerequisites needed to be successful on my journey of life, and I am honored to be on this journey.

How Coaching Has Helped Shanelle:

Going through IUPUI’s coaching program truly helped shape who I have become today. My InsideTrack coach Kimmy Benson (pictured above with Shanelle) is truly enlightening. When I started college I was in a very rough place. I didn’t have any help because I was surrounded by people who had never been through the process of starting college. I felt lost. I felt all alone and felt no one understood my emotions, and then Kimmy changed all that for me. When I was down, Kimmy was there. When I needed advice, Kimmy was there. When I was struggling in my classes, Kimmy was there to help me do better. She found resources to help me succeed. She was not only a coach, but has become my lifelong friend. The coaching program at IUPUI was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It helped me realize that there was a girl inside me who was scared to succeed but was reminded that she had all the qualities it took to have success. I really do not believe that I wouldn’t of had as much success as I did my freshman year if it wasn’t for Kimmy Benson. She believed in me when I didn’t and for that I am forever thankful.

Shanelle’s Advice For Other Students:

Never be afraid to ask for help. I was scared to talk about my feelings for a long time and when I finally did, I felt free. Bravery is a beautiful thing and by taking risks, success is at your fingertips. Fears are limitations set up by the mind that can destroy what you let them destroy. There are so many people and resources around you that want you to have success and you have to let them help because you can’t do this alone. “Please do not feed the fears.”
