Re-Imagine the First Year With AASCU and InsideTrack

Re-Imagining the First Year

In February 2016, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities officially kicked off the Re-Imagining the First Year project aimed at ensuring success for all students. With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and USA Funds, the three-year initiative seeks to dramatically improve the quality of learning and student experience in the first year, increase retention rates, and improve student success.

InsideTrack is a proud partner in this important and visionary initiative and looks forward to collaborating with the 44 participating institutions who responded to a challenge last year from George Mehaffy, AASCU’s vice president of academic leadership and change, to “go bold or go home.

After numerous conversations with AASCU member institutions and having coached nearly 1.5 million students since 2001 (many entering or during their first year), InsideTrack developed customized entry-level solutions designed to generate immediate, positive impact and actionable insights. These offerings include:

  • A detailed report on an institution’s current student-support ecosystem and quality of current student-support initiatives such as intrusive advising, mentoring, or coaching
  • A clearly defined campaign to re-enroll and re-engage students who stopped or dropped out during or after their first year
  • A technology-enabled coaching program costing one dollar a day to engage and retain incoming freshmen

In addition to the insights and recommendations for next steps that participating institutions will receive, these solutions can generate maximum value for all AASCU members by identifying common issues in the first-year experience and best practices for maximizing the impact of existing resources.

“No more pilots. No more small tests. No more trials. We know what to do… We don’t have a knowledge problem; we have an implementation problem.”

—George Mehaffy, vice president of academic leadership and change, AASCU
