Have you ever had a student who doesn’t seem to connect to a “greater purpose?”
As student support pros, we know that the “why” behind a goal is essential to helping students persevere through challenges. When one’s actions are charged with intent, one has more incentive to overcome any obstacles encountered.
“Knowing your why is an important first step in figuring out how to achieve the goals that excite you and create a life you enjoy living.”
The above quote is from a Forbes article, “Do You Know Your ‘Why?’ – 4 Questions to Find Your Purpose,” which offers some specific questions that can help your students (or you) connect or reconnect to the greater purpose behind their goals. While this article is written with a focus on career goals, they can easily be applied to students struggling to find their way – in educational settings or in their personal lives. The questions to ask include:
- What makes you come alive?
- What are your innate strengths?
- Where do you add the greatest value?
- How will you measure your life?
