When finding a career becomes a much harder thing than originally thought

Like many, Oleh wanted more from his career. He worked in a general accounting position, but wanted to pivot to a career in auditing, which offered more variety and opportunity. Armed with a degree in General Business, he pursued an accounting certificate at UCLA Extension that featured an auditing component. However, earning an education was one thing and getting a new job was another – a much harder thing than he originally thought.

As months passed with no prospects, Oleh felt frustrated and worried about finding work. Many employment agencies he contacted said he had good accounting experience to start a career in auditing, but offered temporary, basic bookkeeping positions in small private companies. Fortunately, Oleh learned about InsideTrack career coaching services through the UCLA Extension department and opted to give it a try.

Five months after first connecting with his Career Coach, Oleh not only landed his dream job working at his first-choice accounting firm, but he was able to turn down five other offers in the process.

He credits his success to the job search strategies that he learned through InsideTrack’s uCoach® online platform as well as the guided support from his Career Coach. “InsideTrack provided the structure I needed to effectively search for jobs,” he said. “Through the online modules, I was able to do the fundamental work needed to be able to attract employers in a competitive job market. My coach was able to point out areas that I needed to work on so I continually made progress. Specifically, he helped me to evaluate myself as a professional in the job market, to create a brand, and most importantly to gain the confidence in myself as a professional and show this to employers.”

InsideTrack helped Oleh to gain control of his job search by helping him to develop concrete steps to identify his value to employers and how to communicate that as a candidate. Oleh recommends InsideTrack coaching to other job seekers. “Although there is very good job search advice and information online, the sheer amount of websites and articles can be overwhelming, making it difficult to know where to start”, he said.

InsideTrack helps to provide a framework for job seekers to make the most of this information. For Oleh, the key feature to InsideTrack was access to the one-on-one coaching sessions. “A Career Coach can help you with your particular case. They will listen to your specific situation and then help you to formulate a plan to reach your career goals. For me, the Career Coach was the missing link to my job search success,” he said.

Oleh advises job seekers to fully engage with the online modules and do the essential prep work first that will result in better job search results later. He said he spent the first month refining his professional brand and improving tools like his resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. He then spent about two months networking, connecting to professional associations, attending events and talking with professionals in his field. The final two months he actively engaged in the job search, applying and interviewing for positions. “Through this whole time, I connected with my coach for guidance, feedback, and support,” he said.

Oleh encourages students to be persistent and believe in themselves. “It’s so important to reaching your career goals,” he said.
